August 20 Fireworks 2026: Dinner with a Panoramic View at Buda Castle

Fireworks on August 20 from Buda Castle: when they start, where to get a good view, and when you can make a dinner reservation at the Aranybástya. A practical guide for the evening.

The fireworks display on August 20 is Budapest’s biggest evening spectacle every year: the fireworks soar high above the Danube, and the city is already buzzing with anticipation hours in advance. There are few places that offer a view of this spectacle quite like the Buda Castle District. In this guide, we’ll summarize what you need to know about the 2026 celebration and show you how to plan your dinner at the Aranybástya, where the city lies at your feet.

When will the fireworks display take place on August 20, 2026?

National Day falls on a Thursday in 2026, so many people are planning a long weekend around it. The organizers usually announce the official program at the end of summer. In recent years, the fireworks display has started around 9:00 p.m. and taken place over the downtown section of the Danube, roughly between Margaret Bridge and Rákóczi Bridge. It’s a good idea to check the official channels in August for details, but one thing is certain: downtown and the Castle District will be packed by early afternoon.

Where is the best place to view the fireworks from Buda Castle?

The side of the Castle District facing the Danube is one of the classic spots for watching fireworks: from here, you have a wide view of the river’s downtown stretch, and the lights aren’t blocked by buildings on the Pest side. Aranybástya offers the same view: the Danube, the bridges, and the Pest cityscape. The exact view varies by table, so if you’re coming specifically for the fireworks, please note this in the comments when making your reservation, and we’ll help you find the right spot.

Dinner Before the Fireworks: How to Plan Your Evening

The Aranybástya is open every day Aranybástya week from 12:00 to 22:00. If you’d like to enjoy a leisurely dinner before the fireworks, it’s best to arrive between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.—that way, you’ll have time for an aperitif and a multi-course dinner, and you can watch the fireworks from the comfort of your table without rushing.

  • Afternoon: a walk through the Castle District, taking in the festive events
  • Between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.: arrival at the Aranybástya, dinner with a panoramic view
  • Around 9:00 p.m.: fireworks over the Danube

You can take a look at the menu in advance: the cuisine is rooted in upper-middle-class traditions, featuring Hungarian flavors and a touch of global inspiration. The menu is available here in Hungarian and English.

What can you expect in the Castle District on the holiday?

August 20 is one of the busiest days in the Castle District: during the day, festive events, craft fairs, and thousands of visitors fill the streets, and by evening, the Danube embankments and viewing points are also packed. There are two things you should decide in advance. The first is how you’ll get there: due to festival closures, it’s typically impossible to drive up to the Castle District on this day, so plan to go on foot or by bus. The second is dinner: if you’ve reserved a table, your evening won’t be spent looking for a place to sit, but enjoying what you came for. The crowds stay down below, while you dine high above the city.

What’s more, the holiday falls on a Thursday, so many people take Friday off as well. If you’re planning a long weekend, it’s a good idea to make reservations well in advance for Friday and Saturday evenings—those nights fill up quickly, too.

Last year we had a full house: we're getting ready for this year, too

Last year, the evening of August 20 at the Aranybástya was a sell-out: every table was reserved for the festive dinner, and our guests were able to watch the fireworks display over the city. We’re planning another festive evening this year, and we’ll be announcing the details soon here on the blog and on our social media pages. It’s a good idea to mark the date on your calendar now: based on last year’s demand, tables sell out quickly.

When can you make a reservation for August 20?

Important note: At Aranybástya, you can reserve a table no more than 14 days in advance. Therefore, reservations for the dinner on August 20 will open on August 6, 2026, on the reservation page. There’s typically high demand for this festive evening, so it’s a good idea to book your table on the very first day reservations open. Set a reminder for August 6, and leave the rest to us.

Would you rather celebrate with a larger group or in a private setting?

The Panorama Terrace can accommodate 100 guests for a standing reception or 80 for a seated dinner, while the Private Terrace offers a separate space overlooking the cityscape for groups of up to 25.
