September in the Buda Castle District: the most beautiful month of the year in the Castle District

Wine Festival, September 9–12; Heritage Days, September 19–20; and the most beautiful month in the Castle District—without the crowds. Event calendar and dinner at Buda Castle.

If you’ve only ever visited Buda Castle in the summer, you don’t really know it. In July and August, Trinity Square and the Fisherman’s Bastion live to the rhythm of the tour buses, but in September, the Castle District takes on a different character: the crowds thin out, the weather is still pleasant, the light softens, and the season’s best events begin one after another. We’ve put together a list of the September events awaiting you at Buda Castle in 2026, and how to plan a great day out with them.

What events will be held at Buda Castle in September 2026?

September brings two major events to the Castle District: the Budapest Wine Festival, September 9–12 at the Buda Castle, and Cultural Heritage Days on September 19–20, when sites that are normally closed to the public open their doors nationwide. In addition, the Castle District’s permanent attractions and exhibitions await visitors, with shorter lines than in the summer.

Budapest Wine Festival, September 9–12

The 35th edition of the festival will take place at the Buda Castle, featuring nearly 200 domestic and international exhibitors, thousands of wines, a Gourmet Courtyard, and concerts. It runs from Wednesday through Saturday, so you can plan a long weekend around it.

The palace is about a 15-minute walk from us, which means you can easily fit both the tasting and dinner into one evening. We’ve written a separate article with all the details: when to arrive, how to plan your evening, and when you can start making reservations.

Cultural Heritage Days, September 19–20.

This weekend, buildings across the country that are normally closed to the public will open their doors: guided walks, themed tours, exhibitions, and family activities await visitors. This year’s theme is endangered heritage, renewal, and breathing new life into buildings.

The Buda Castle District is a World Heritage Site in its entirety, so this is the weekend when, while you’re out walking, you won’t just be looking at the buildings—you’ll also get to step inside a few of them. The list of venues in Budapest is constantly expanding; be sure to check the program list at oroksegnapok.gov.hu before you go.

Why is September the best month to visit the Castle District?

Four things are happening at the same time:

  • The crowds are thinning out. Now that the peak summer season is over, you can take photos along the promenades again without other groups getting in the way.
  • The weather is still nice, but it's not hot anymore. You can really sit out on the terrace for a long time in September.
  • Sunset comes earlier. In the summer, it gets dark after nine, but in September, sunset coincides with dinnertime. This is a major advantage when viewed from the Danube.
  • The cultural season is kicking off. After the summer lull, exhibitions and events are back— you can find our current exhibitions here.

How do you get there, and where should you stop?

Getting to the Castle is the point where a good day can easily go wrong. In short: buses 16 and 216 take you to the Donáti utca or Dísz tér stops; if you’re driving, the 400-space underground parking garage beneath the Lovarda is the most reliable option; the parking zone code on Csónak utca is 3011. For those who want to avoid parking altogether, our Várbusz shuttle service departs from Dózsa György Square.

We have compiled a detailed guide, covering all options and prices, in a separate guide.

Aranybástya , located at 1 Csónak Street, is open every day from 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The last reservation time is 8:00 p.m.; the kitchen accepts orders until 9:00 p.m., and we remain open even in bad weather.

What Should You Eat in September?

The kitchen follows the tradition of upper-class Hungarian cuisine, featuring many dishes perfect for the transition into fall. From the dinner menu: roast duck soup with ginger matzo dumplings, seared duck liver with rhubarb chutney and homemade brioche, rosé-poached duck breast with truffles and Pecorino mashed potatoes, and veal paprikash with egg-stuffed nokedli. To finish, Dobos cake or Somlói galuska.

If you're interested in the full range of Hungarian cuisine, you can read about it in our article on the "Hungarikum" menu and in our piece on upper-class Hungarian cuisine.

When should I make a reservation?

You can reserve a table within a 14-day window, so you can book for the week of the wine festival starting in late August or for the Heritage Days weekend starting September 5. These two weekends fill up the fastest. If your group has between 13 and 30 people, a group reservation is the way to go.
