Törley, Kreinbacher and the Sparkling Legacy of Hungary

Discover the story of Hungarian sparkling wine through two iconic names – Törley and Kreinbacher – and learn where to experience them in style: at Aranybástya Restaurant in Budapest.

History, Bubbles and Elegance: The True Face of Hungarian Sparkling Wine at Aranybástya

Sparkling wine is more than just a drink. It’s a feeling, a celebration, a moment captured in bubbles. While most people associate it with French champagne, Hungary has a rich sparkling wine tradition of its own – full of character, ambition and pride. Two names define this journey: Törley and Kreinbacher. Luckily, there’s a place in Budapest where these stories come to life in the glass, at the elegant Aranybástya Restaurant.

The Beginning: Törley and the Birth of a Classic

The real foundation of Hungarian sparkling wine culture was laid by József Törley at the end of the 19th century. He brought the knowledge back from France and put it into practice in Budafok. At that time, few people believed that the Hungarian vineyard and climate could produce world-class sparkling wine. But Törley did - and he was right.

His wines quickly gained popularity across the Austro-Hungarian Empire and even beyond. In fact, for many Hungarians, the name Törley became synonymous with sparkling wine itself. Despite wars, regime changes, and economic ups and downs, the brand survived – and today, it’s still a symbol of tradition and quality.

A New Era: Kreinbacher and the Rise of Somló

After the millennium, someone came along who dared to dream big again: József Kreinbacher. With his estate in the Somló wine region, he took Hungarian sparkling wine production to a whole new level. His goal was nothing less than to compete with French champagne, but on a Hungarian basis.

The estate produces classic bottle fermented sparkling wines, following the rules of the French "méthode traditionnelle". The result: pure, mineral, elegant drinks that have won prizes not only at national competitions but also at the world's most prestigious wine events. Anyone who has tasted Kreinbacher Brut Nature or Prestige Brut knows exactly what it's all about.

Where to Experience It All

An excellent champagne is not just an experience in itself—it matters where and how you drink it. And there is a place in Budapest where champagne is not just a drink on the menu, but part of the experience: the Aranybástya , located at the foot of Buda Castle.

The Aranybástya exudes Aranybástya unique elegance, and not just because of the panoramic view. The restaurant’s selection includes several top-tier Hungarian sparkling wines, including, of course, Kreinbacher wines, as well as true rarities such as Philipponnat Champagne, for which the Aranybástya serves as the official Hungarian ambassador.
