Győző Byhon and Andrea Gulyás are a married couple of painters from Szentendre. Győző Byhon uses a wide variety of materials for his unique works. For his pieces captured from a bird’s-eye view, he utilizes drone photos he took himself as well as Google Earth. His fascination with the subject is no coincidence; in fact, he earned a degree in geography out of sheer curiosity. As a child, he collected maps for their aesthetic appeal and has always been interested in geology. He became fascinated with top-down representations after seeing an orthophoto—that is, an aerial photograph—in a newspaper: orthophotos are also often called photomaps, as they combine the characteristics of photographs and maps into a single object. This artistic vision, developed with great care, becomes even more extraordinary once the image is hung on the wall, for the world—so to speak—rotates 90 degrees, allowing the viewer to soar along with the artwork as they take it in.
Andrea Gulyás’s paintings feature flat forms arranged with geometric precision, yet the compositions also capture fleeting impressions. The silhouette of a typical city or location has remained unchanged in the backgrounds of these images for centuries, while modern vehicles—such as airplanes, airships, or even hang gliders—soar in the foreground. These are radical abstractions, yet we are witnessing sensitive works, and this worldview is capable of connecting with our own—both in an abstract and a literal sense.
