The word "Pentecost" comes from the Greek word "pentekoste," meaning fiftieth, as it is celebrated on the fiftieth day after Easter. In Hungary, one tradition during Pentecost is raising and dancing around a maypole, which symbolizes fertility and the forthcoming spring. The festivities typically entail parades, singing, and dancing with donations being collected throughout the village. Another tradition is when green branches and flowers are carried around the village to celebrate and welcome spring. One of the most significant Pentecost traditions is the election of the Pentecostal King. After completing a series of skillful tasks, the winner could enjoy free drinks at taverns for a year and was invited to every wedding. Usually, the poor rarely had the opportunity to consume meat, but after Easte the Pentecost holiday specifically revolved around eating meat dishes.
